This is stage F-C - Wherever - with the Leo II on R-Typer difficulty. Played on Score Attack.
About this ship:
This is one of the ships from R-Type Leo. More on that in the Did You Know section. This ship is tremendously powerful. The red weapon is a straight on laser that's more powerful than a loop two wave cannon because it is continuous, and if you're doing grazing damage, you can kill anything very quickly. The blue laser fires quick reflective beams, shorter than the R9A's, but you can fill up the screen with your bullets fast. The yellow laser bends at 90 degree angles to hit targets. Picking up a single Bit power up gives you both Bits. The Psy Bits + will fire normal bullets while the Force is detached and will fire an extra laser from each Bit with the Force attached. When you charge up the wave cannon completely to loop one or two, the Psy Bits + will fly away from the ship and home in on enemies, doing damage. They absorb bullets just like the Force does, giving you added protection. There's almost no reason to even use the wave cannon for damage, especially while you have the red laser, because it does damage so much faster overall. It really could be used just to launch the bits at enemies.
Pros:
+ All three weapons are insanely powerful, and having the Psy Bits + adds one more laser from each to your firepower. Red does damage faster than a wave cannon shot, particularly if grazing the enemy with the beam. Blue fires rapid reflective lasers. Yellow fires three beams from the Force that will turn 90 degree angles to hit enemies.
+ Psy Bits + absorb normal bullets exactly like the Force does, giving added protection.
+ Psy Bits + will fly away from the ship and attack enemies for a set time after charging the wave cannon completely to loop one or two.
+ Psy Bits + can be aimed front or back depending on horizontal movement.
+ This is one of the few ships capable of taking on F-C.
Cons:
- This ship has no cons, aside from being too powerful, if you want to nitpick.
Ships in this series:
Leo, Leo II
Stage note:
A space stage where you are flying through time from 2163 to 2501. You can watch the years count upward to measure how far along you are. There is no boss in this stage, but it does a lot of memorization to be played well. No matter how many ships you come in with in the main game, you still only get one life here. A lot of the early enemy formations are straight from stage 5.0 - battleship placement, missile ships, and homing laser ships. No green Surge Bydo flying around early on in R-Typer, so not as difficult overall.
Did you know:
The laser turrets along each century are called Bats. The ships that fire the 90 degree bending lasers are called Photon Dorney. Both came from a vertical scrolling shooter called Image Fight that Irem released in 1988. Both enemies are in the penalty stage from that game. The Leo II is from R-Type Leo, which came out in 1992. R-Type Leo had no Force device, but focused on bit firepower, and they reacted the same in that game. If you died, rather than using checkpoints, your next ship would immediately spawn. It's a fun game if anyone else out there has played it.
Personal note:
I love the time travel aspect in this stage. The beginning text and explanation make it feel more epic. The starting music is fantastic too; one of my favorite from the game. There's a point after you pass by the asteroid section where you fly through a gate and start getting attacked by Cancers. I always thought it was oddly creepy that there would be a structure like that out in deep space while you were traveling through time.
As long as you bring a ship that is capable of handling the wave of green Surge Bydo at the end, this stage is not too difficult, provided you've memorized where everything comes from. The Leo II is my favorite for handling that part because of the yellow weapon. I've never been able to get through with most of the other ships, and don't even have a viable strategy for it. You NEED a weapon that will easily clear out that wave of enemies, or block the majority of their bullets, or you're dead. Simple as that.

matrix, other than the ships which can use any force, bits, etc, which is the most overpowered ship in the game?

@EigenX7 The Leo II probably most closely followed by Charon and Sexy Dynamite. Leo II's red weapon is so overpowered. It might be hard to tell in the video, but if you play the game with it and feel how powerful it is, it's just unbelievable. The Charon's yellow weapon is super powered too, capable of clearing the entire screen of weak enemies without trouble. Sexy Dynamite is up there too, because the Force charges so fast. I used all three ships in F-C on R-Typer with little trouble.

@matrixandraia What about Ragnarok II?
EigenX7 5 months ago
@EigenX7 I don't feel that the Ragnarok II is in there with the others because it lacks a completely screen clearing weapon and the wave cannon takes a long time to charge. It does have the blue weapon, which is great, but the others have lasers that are more continuous and makes this stage easier to handle. Ragnarok II has its own strengths, which I'll talk about when I get back to stage 4.0.
