This is one of a series of educational videos produced by the Ontario Institute of Agrologists (OIA) to help internationally educated immigrants find careers in agriculture, agri-food and agri-science in Ontario. Supported by the Ontario Government, the "Bridging to Employment" project can help you to compete in the job search market.

Hi. My name is Lord Abbey. In my first video I told my story about how I achieved my career goal as a horticulturalist here at The Green Barn in Toronto. I really enjoyed working with co-op students and volunteers to help city people experience the joy of growing their own food.

Now 28 months later, I'm taking another important step in my career path. I was recently accepted as Horticulture Instructor and Researcher at Assiniboine College in Manitoba. There, I'll help to develop a new horticulture program and build two new greenhouses to conduct research and teach students. It's a natural progression from my work here at The Green Barn.

It's an unbelievable opportunity and it's thanks to the guidance and support that I received from the Ontario Institute of Agrologists. Becoming a member was a smart move and I took full advantage of all the opportunities that their Bridging to Employment Program had to offer.

I attended workshops that helped me prepare for interviews, update my skills, and get a better understanding of the Canadian work culture. I also made some valuable connections with important people in the industry. The staff at the Ontario Institute of Agrologists often took the time to give me personal guidance and support.

My journey to achieve my career goal here in Canada wasn't easy at first. When I moved to Canada from Ghana with my family in 2007, I thought I'd have no problem finding a suitable position. I have a Masters Degree and PhD in Horticulture and Crop Science from the United Kingdom, an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture at the University of Ghana, and years of experience as a Research Scientist in Ghana.

But after applying for a number of positions, I soon learned how competitive the job market is in Canada. I also learned something very important that I'm sure helped me to succeed - being a member of a professional Canadian association and holding a professional designation is a major advantage when marketing yourself in the Canadian job market.

I eventually earned my designation as a Professional Agrologist. This added a lot of credibility to my credentials. It shows that although I was educated abroad, my skills are recognized by a professional Canadian organization.

I wouldn't have been considered for the position at Assiniboine College in Manitoba if I didn't have a Professional Agrologist designation. It was a mandatory requirement. It's also thanks to a glowing reference from the Registrar at the Ontario Institute of Agrologists.

I was an active member of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and I'll miss playing a role as a committee member and member of the Board of Directors. I was also the Editor of an edition of the Ontario Agrologist magazine. Mentoring new and upcoming agrologists and helping other people to achieve their career goals was especially rewarding for me.

I'm proud to say that I'm a Professional Agrologist. It's a credential that's recognized across Canada and I know that it helped me to achieve my career goal.

My name is Lord Abbey and I'm very grateful to the people at the Ontario Institute of Agrologists for helping me get to where I am today.
