I'm not sure if he ever explained it in full (other than that he was very serious about his choreography and might have wished he was working with a trained dancer instead), he did eventually express surprise that Debbie even spoke to him after they did this film. So if he didn't apologize outright, he did at least acknowledge it.

There's a great anecdote somewhere about Fred Astaire also giving Debbie some dance pointers - in a more patient and nurturing manner, no less.

I think it was he came from a background of teaching dance (he had a dance school from 1932, when he was 20), rather than simply just being a dancer.

And Debbie Reynolds wasn't a trained dancer, so needed a lot of tuition compared to O'Connor, who was. So he would have been under a lot of time constraints to bring somebody up to standard for filming.

You've got to admit, he did a pretty good job.
