Heinz Kruse sang for a long time in Hamburg in the charakter Fach before moving into the Heldentenor repertoire. He was vocally almost ideal in the repertoire. Interestingly, he was quite short, which was something that his directors had to work around (Wagner leading ladies are often fairly tall). A wonderful singer, and his stroke was a blow to the profession.
