In this episode the influence of the Ramayan on the great Chinese classic "The Journey to the West" is explored. This episode focusses in particular on the similarities between Hanuman Swami and Sun Wu Kong, who not only one of the most popular cultural icons (if not the most popular cultural icon) throughout the Far-East, but also worshipped as a Daoist and Buddhist deity, with dedicated temples both inside as well as outside China.

In short, there is no evidence nor is it believed that Hanuman Swami accompanied the real life Xuánzàng. However there is strong evidence that parts of the fictional "Journey to the West" is based on the Ramayan and that Sūn Wùkōng, who is a major Chinese cultural and religious icon is in fact based on Hanuman Swami.

Xuánzàng (玄奘) is regarded by historicians as a non-fictional persons, so I can only assume that there is solid evidence of his existence.

he total number of texts brought by Xuánzàng from India to China is 657, enumerated as follows:

    Mahayanist sutras: 224 items

    Mahayanist sastras: 192

Sthavira sutras, sastras and Vinaya: 14

Mahasangika sutras, sastras and Vinaya: 15

Mahisasaka sutras, sastras and Vinaya: 22

Sammitiya sutras, sastras and Vinaya: 15
