Four fire engines were called to Fry's Car Components off Forton Road, Gosport, after 15 derelict cars caught alight at 1.30pm on 22nd March 2009. The smoke from the fire could be seen through Portsmouth, Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent and as far as Portsdown Hill. Sailors in the Solent could also see the smoke.

Scores of homes have had to be evacuated because of fears a fuel dump at the scrapyard could catch fire and cause further damage.

A crowd of about 50 residents gathered near St Vincent College to see the cause of the fire and traffic on the A32 in Gosport has also been severely affected

About 100 people were evacuated from Lear Road and Kings Road and taken to Thorngate Halls. About 40 firefighters are at the scene dealing with incident. Police asked members of the public living on the eastern side of Gosport to keep their windows and doors closed. A spokesman also advised people to avoid going into the centre of the town to allow access to emergency vehicles.

'Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue are currently on scene at a major fire in Gosport. In excess of 100 people have been evacuated after a blaze at a car components yard in Jubilee Road.'
