A clip from The West Wing; Season 4, Episode 2. Great use of repetition and a great money line: "The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels."

  • "The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. They're our students, and our teachers, and our parents, and our friends. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, that every time we think we've measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes, and we reach for the stars..."

    holy SHIT

  • @platinumsalamander "When did you write that last part of the speech?"

  • @mscottveach I think that was Bruno's way of giving a compliment. To me, in that moment he acknowledged that it was the kind of speech no normal person could have written. It took a truly exceptional speechwriter. "Freak" is just another way of saying "exceptional" in that context. Most people who hear the speech are going to credit Bartlet saying the right words at a wrong time, and of course his delivery is perfection, but it was Sam who wrote it, and Bruno acknowledged that.

  • well

    im crying

  • @prigg88 you do...Winston Churchill.

  • Still after watching this episode for the 5th time it makes me feel like crying. The script writting is so pwerful it makes you believe what you see and hear is real. a truely great show. From a great British fan. God bless Jed and co

  • Its true - Sorkin felt that he has not reflected his own personal feelings about 9/11 in the show - so while this speech is about a bombing in a school it really is about 9/11 and the emergency services responses.

  • Great part of the west wing!! Bet obama wishes he's allowed to use music in his speeches. :)

  • This is more about 9/11 than anything else

  • @Significantpower this is true. it's not really a rational desire on my part. i just wish they would have let the moment sit the way it was... but the contrast was probably useful in keeping things from becoming maudelin.

  • @mscottveach On the other hand it fits in with Bruno's character, he's a cynical bastard obsessed with winning.

  • martin sheen murders this. he really deserves the lion share of credit.
