  • My friend, this is not Okinawan karate. It's a Monk Fist form I picked up in Fujian called Crane Fist [Tsuruken in Japanese]. I suppose the Japanese-style gi, that I am an Okinawan stylist, and the Butokuden ambiance, might lead one to think that it's a local form.

    Shalom

  • Sensei, are you still with the DNBK, or do you still keep contact with them? Would love to see in future events, my dojo is an affiliate of Tesshin Hamada's organization. We recently had a ceremony in April honoring Hanshi Bill Dometrich and wife's promotion to Hanshi and Kyoshi. They made several top Chito-Ryu sensei perform execellent kata. I'd like to know what your thoughts are on Chito-Ryu and DNBK in general, if that's okay with you. Respect to you sir.

  • Hello Deek,

I am no longer with the DNBK but I still have great respect for Chito Ryu. I cannot say the same for the DNBK nor Hiro Hamada. IMO, he exemplifies all that is wrong with karate.

  • Mr. Shapland learned the kata from me after I returned to Okinawa from Fuzhou.

  • @niseikenpo but Nepai is for heaven shake the Okinawan version of Chinese form? Is not it?

  • @mccarthysensei Hai, Wakarimasu!

  • Wow. Thank you Mcarthy Sensei for sharing so much on the internet. Were you performing the kata as a Chinese stylist would have performed it or using Okinawan body mechanics? Or is there even a difference between Crane Fist and Okinawan?

  • It looks like nipaipo it looks like nepai it's not okinawan but crane fist. What it comes down to is if you don't know the bunkai it's a dance lesson..Doesn't matter how nice or what it looks like or where it came from.

  • Looks like Shito Ryu Nipaipo with a few alterations? Nice kata though.

  • I see. I would ask why, but I understand if you wish not to discuss it. I've seen how ugly people who disagree with you have been when they talked to you in this site, and I wouldn't want to do that. Far as I see it, a beginner like me has little business commenting on disagreements between two masters. At any rate, thank for your reply. Respect.

  • Thank you for the answer sensei.
