Northbound goods train on the Alice Springs - Darwin Railway at Pootnoura in South Australia December 10 2010. North of this location, there was a big derailment after heavy rain weakened or washed out the trackbed about a couple of weeks earlier. A road train driver told me that business really picks up when the railway is out of operation for such reasons. The rail service was closed for near a week apparently. What's at Pootnoura? Obviously not much more than you can see in this video! This is the standard gauge railway that replaced the old Central Australia narrow gauge line which was closed in 1980 and pulled up in 1983-83. There are videos posted on the 'reidgck' channel, showing the interesting and unusual method that was used to pull up the old Ghan line. Interestingly, the two trucks in the video were in communication with each other via channel 40 on the UHF CB radio. Some ten minutes before the train arrived on the scene, the drivers were discussing the train they were driving alongside which gave me notice that the train was coming so I was ready to record its passing.
