Considering the recent natural disaster in Haiti I find this upload of One Step Beyond, titled "Earthquake," to be timely. While relief efforts from around the world rush to bring aid to Haiti,
this program reminds us of the random destructive forces of nature.

John Newland, "our guide into the world of the unknown," is your host as the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 is portrayed. The destruction from this earthquake and the ensuing fire place this tragic event among the greatest natural disasters in United States history.

Gerald Perkins (David Opatoshu) is a bellboy at a San Francisco hotel when he begins to have visions of an earthquake. He tries desperately to warn people but is not take seriously, partly because of a history of alcoholism. His persistence costs him his job and he finally resigns himself to the inevitable.

Perkins claims that the earthquake will occur at 5:13 P.M. The San Francisco earthquake occurred at 5:12 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Note the scene in part three during which the flight of animals from San Francisco is discussed. I don't know if this occurred during the real earthquake of 1906 but unusual animal behavior immediately preceding a natural disaster is a known phenomenon.

It is a fact that renowned opera tenor Enrico Caruso was in San Francisco and gave a performance of "Carmen" at the Tivoli Opera House the night before the earthquake struck. In this program Rosa and Carlo Bandetti are celebrating their fortieth wedding anniversary and are planning to see this performance.
