An estimated 1,100 students attended a rally at Nevada's capital protesting budget cuts to higher education and K-12 on March 21. It's said to be one of the largest protests in state history. Produced by Brian Duggan for the Nevada Appeal.
A GOOD ECONOMY, NOT SCHOOL IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL HELP YOU> THEREFOR CUT THE FUCKIN EDUCATION IN THE BALLS.
I've learnt much more on the internet than I've learnt at school. The problem is credential-ism. Hire the best person for the job based on their knowledge, not on their ability to pay 60 thousand dollars for a piece of paper.
I really don't think these people understand the problem here... First our gov. took a pay cut to help this country out and when we pay money for a non profit subject that isn't helping... You can say that school will create jobs for people, but when there aren't any jobs for certain areas of work then school won't help. This state needs to cut and wait for the economy to pick back up! Not spend on programs that are going to lose us money.
Obama has tied additional funding through the "race to the top program" to the expansion of charter schools and the implementation of punitive measures against teachers, such as merit pay.
Obama has deliberately blamed teachers for the crisis of education, praising the mass firing of educators at "failing schools." Meanwhile, the Wall Street speculators responsible for the economic crisis have been given a free pass, and indeed are now wealthier than ever.
It's bullshit. The foreign mining companies can come in and rape our land, then not pay the taxes on it, and our "leaders" are just fine with it. Just another example of the rich getting richer, and the working class bearing the load of our state's struggles.
Wow!! I didn't think we were going to make headlines!! How amazing is that!! I'm a full-time student/part-time employee attending CSN. I'm getting ready to get my associate's degree in criminal justice in the spring of 2012 and the fact that the legislators are talking about raising tuition by a high percentage and taking out degree programs terrifies me!! I'm even checking out other options to get myself out of this deep hole!!
1) @barrywhite - how did you like the 9-5 proposition? How's about we shut down WNC? Some of that "shared sacrifice" the Governor likes so much. After all, the student populous is located in Clark/Washoe, not much return in the rurals. That cool with you?
2) The Carson City event was historic! K-12 and Higher Ed, standing side by side in solidarity. That's how it should be, because we both need each other. Great job to my fellow organizers, because we are all creating history.
@barrywhite2231 1) Taking advantage of these natural resources will create revenue for the state, and 2) Jobs will be created for our residents. This state also needs to reevaluate the pathetic taxation of big business', which is practically nonexistent. We need big change in this state, or we may be looking at the same crisis Wisconsin is going through.
@barrywhite2231 No, cutting classes or the education budget is not the answer. This states earns revenue from three major sources: the sales tax of store-bought products, casinos, and brothels. What needs to happen is our elected officials must come up with new plans to bring revenue to this state without sacrificing education in times of economic hardships. This state has an abundance of natural resources that are not being taken advantage of and should be for two reaqsons.
about... it really makes me sad to live in this state. I love this state I have lived here my hole life, but when Isee stuff like this it makes me sad to say I am from this state.
