They WERE trying to give the abbreviated version of his story because believe it or not, not everyone knows who Andy Kaufman was. As you said, time WAS a factor but I thought that it did an excellent job giving the overview. If you noticed they ALSO left the question of whether he faked his death or not an open ended question because they werent sure themselves, including Andy's old friend Danny Devito who produced, co-starred in and spearheaded the making of "Man on the Moon" himself.

man on the moon had so much potential , with the production and cast , however i feel that it fell way short ..i mean it didnt even cover the things that made andy ledgane , aside from the main stream stuff ..i understand you can not fit ones intire existance in 2 hour reel , but i still feel that they ncould have done better job

In "Andy Kaufman Revealed" his best friend Bob Zmuda(Played memorably in "Man on the Moon" by Paul Giamatti) says the following:
"Kaufman if you're still alive, I'll kill you."

well i do know that Andy quite often set his friends and family up for his own amusement , in fact when he was dying some of his close friends thought it was a put on
