What does the ideal software project look like? How do we determine what factors will keep projects on schedule and on budget? How can we minimize software defects and optimize developers performance? Watts Humphrey delves into the essential factors that differentiate ideal software jobs from less effective projects, introduces the concept of knowledge management, and explains why traditional management styles may not work for software development projects.
Humphrey examines the reasons that software jobs can fail and proposes realistic solutions to these problems. Critical importance is placed on leadership and planning—two frequently overlooked aspects of development that can have a huge impact on the final product. Humphreys ideas can be applied to almost any software project to make it efficient and effective in producing on-time, high-quality software.
A National Medal of Technology Winner and founder of the Carnegie Mellon® Software Engineering Institutes (SEI) Software Process Maturity Model, Humphrey works as a senior
fellow and research scientist at the SEI, whose work spans many technical papers and eleven books.
Prior to joining the SEI, Humphrey spent 27 years with IBM including management of the first 19 releases of OS/36, and as Director of Programming Quality and Process.
