Still missed. My father grew up with Al and the Holbert family in Warrington. They were lifelong friends and are together now in a higher place. The dealership was recently sold to the Thompson group and its sad not to see the Holbert name on Rt. 611 anymore. He was about the nicest, kindest person you'd ever want to meet.
I came up watching F1, IMSA, CART at Long Beach, Laguna, Sears Point and Portland. I got to see many week ends of great racing through the years. Just watching Al in the paddock and how hard this teams worked for him. He was simply one of the all time great drivers but he was a class guy too. I was so proud of his IndyCar effort and really heartbroken to hear of his passing. I probably watched this clip on TV at the time.
Al was my hero as a child and my favorite number is still 14. I was privileged enough to meet him once at Mid-Ohio (when I was 14 years old) - he was nothing but gracious & kind to both me & my father & he still serves as an inspiration to me.
fan of AlHolbert ever since the 1976 Camel GT race at Mid Ohio. i was a black teenager and i asked him for his autograph. i expected the worse but he said "certainly". Saw him race his dekon #14 monza. On a friday in Cols Ohio(1988) my stop clock quit working at about 10 til 9 i belive. Me and my father took a nite time drive up north on161. We came upon some fire trucks way out in the field near OSU airport. one could tell plane parts where present. AL Holbert RIP race hero.
i met him briefly in 1984 when i was 12 at Pocono, where he won. honestly, i was a Jag fan, so i didnt want him to win really..lol. Now, i have a lot of respect for how great he was, as a driver and a tuner. it was a serious shock to hear of his passing that day in 1988, and i was watching the Columbus race when this video was shown. I heard his son got involved in Nascar, too bad he didnt drive...
Beautiful! Al was my hero, I met him when I was 8, he died when I was 18, I saw him a month or so before, although he never remembered my name, he always knew my face and would invite me in to the paddock area and watch and talk with the crew and drivers. Al was awesome! He is missed in racing, and despite Porsche's accomplishments the last few years in ALMS, Porsche has never fully recovered from his loss.
