MaximsNewsNetwork: 17 November 2009 - UNTV: United Nations: The Security Council condemns the recent attacks on civilians by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and calls for international cooperation for the protection of civilians.

The Security Council today (17 November) issued a press statement strongly condemning the continued and recently increasing attacks carried out by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and the Sudan which have resulted in the death, abduction and displacement of thousands of civilians.

The statement read by Council President Thomas Mayr-Harting of Austria expressed deep concern at the direct and serious threat the activities of the LRA pose to the civilian population, the conduct of humanitarian operations and regional stability and commended the States in the region for their increased cooperation, welcoming their joint efforts to address the serious threat posed by the LRA.

Mayr-Harting said that when the time comes to renew the mandates of UN peacekeeping missions in the region, the protection of civilians was an aspect that needs to be looked at. He highlighted the fact that the press statement called on the missions in the region to coordinate their strategies for the protection of civilians, recalling that the Security Council just passed Resolution 1894 which contains the concept of mission-wide strategies for the protection of civilians.

The press statement also reiterated the Security Councils demand that the LRA immediately cease all attacks on civilians, urging them to surrender, assemble and disarm, as required by the Final Peace Agreement.
