It's made out of Corplas, essentially sign plastic and they fly very well for next to nothing in material cost.

I think I see the problem. You were hanging onto the plane and not letting it go. If you let it loose, it might have a chance to get airborne. I learned all this in college.

Why not set the engine back further to center the weight near the wings to help with balance? You could use a shaft to connect the engine with the propeller.
