Probably most well known from The Clancy Brothers (and the Late Tommy Makem). The melody to this song may be recognized as the same as the "Streets of Laredo". Patrick Donnelly, who took the name Phelim Brady, was known as "The Bard of Armagh" and lived from 1650-1716. (I have my doubts on this as "four score and three years would put the bard at age 83 years old in my understanding yet Patrick died at 66 - hmmm) I believe this song was written in the mid 1800's but I have found conflicting reports. If any one can lead me to more accurate dates, I would be most appreciative. A "Bard" was known as a story teller or singer of songs.

Well, With St. Patrick's day and many othe issues going on, I have been busier than a one-legged man in an Irish step dancing contest. Sorry for not communicationg with all my friends, I promise, I will catch up soon!
Best regards to all,
John

  • I hope you do! This is at the top of my list of favorites!!! Thank you so much!

  • I love it. Thank you so, so much. How do you spell shallai? Obviously that is not how you spell it. But my Irish father had one. A rather fancy one and carved by hand. It must be worth a fortune, but alas, I do not have it. His last wife has it. She is so not with it, she probably does not realize what it is worth. It is made of ebony wood and carved by hand. I wished the hell I had it. It is years and years old. He also had a bottle of Guiness which she has, I reckon if you opened

  • @vodka4everandalways Hi!!! It is spelled "Shillelagh". Yes one of that obvious quality would be nice to have! It is a pleasure to make your aquaintance and thank you for commenting!

  • Super, I just love this song, I might cover it myself. BRAVO

  • You are more than welcome. I am only an amateur, but you are good.

  • Thank you... I think I would have to agree with your assesment. I think it "could" be done on a guitar, but with that being said, it would have been much nicer if it was finger picked, yet with a harp would have been much better. I appreciate your feedback!
