The Bonobo, until recently usually called the Pygmy Chimpanzee, is found in the wild only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Along with the Common Chimpanzee, the Bonobo is the closest relative to Humans. This primate feeds mainly on fruits, but supplements its diet with leaves and sometimes small animals.
They are an endangered species, due to both habitat loss and hunting for bushmeat. Today, at most several thousand Bonobos remain. This is part of a more general trend of ape extinction.
