This video shows a little bit more of the pile driving operation. This gets quite loud, as the pile driving rig is basically a 6,000 pound weight that gets repeatedly dropped from over 8 feet on to the end of the pile. This pushes the pile further into the ground, and is the basis of the foundation for the bridge. At this location, there was some difficulty in driving the piles, the ground was basically too hard. The contractor eventually brought out an even bigger hammer, 8,000 pounds.
