Under the sponsorship of the National Center for Medical Intelligence, BioPortal was developed to be a real time, dynamic, spatio-temoro-genomic analytical and visualization tool that displays data on infectious diseases to more than 300 users in 30 countries. Dr. Michael Ascher chaired the group assigned by the Department of Health and Human Services to develop specifications for a National Infectious Disease Informatics Infrastructure that laid the foundation to BioPortal. In California, BioPortal has wide applicability for tracking and integrating data from BioWatch, the Respiratory Laboratory Network, the Laboratory Response Network, and other information sources on healthcare, medical and public health.
