This was the first major speedrun since I made the major attempt to finally start a new set of improvements due for my Yoshi's Island 100% records. This new generation of speedruns all heavily reference Spezzafer's now-defunct 100% TAS WIP for inspiration and try to replicate as much of that as possible while altering routes featured to make a little more consistent and possible for my human hands. :)
Over time though, I'll probably revisit these one last time because I'll end up reinspired from NxCy and Baxter's Yoshi's Island 100% TAS. But only time will tell.
[0:09] Spitting the gusty upward was strictly to show off. It isn't necessary. Swallowing it where I ate it would've worked too. ;P
[0:18] I practiced this shot like crazy! But I'm firing an egg at the "?" cloud the first time to reveal the flower, then quick turning again to fire a second egg at the now-revealed flower off-screen. Honestly, I can double-shot it even faster than displayed here, but the flower does this "awakening" animation and the egg would go past the flower and not count.
[0:20] Spitting the shy guy upward then eating him is me showing off again. :)
[0:30] After practicing this shot forever and still not able to figure out a way to always destroy all three foam walls, my personal limit was to just be able to get the first two destroyed and quickly fire at the third before physically reaching it.
[0:33] The scenario that played here -- almost perfect triple-foam wall destroyed with one egg ... EXCEPT the bottom portion of the first part of the third wall -- was the first time this had happened. Thankfully I respond fast enough to quickly shoot an egg and destroy the remaining foam. Unfortunately, I lost speed in the process and mentally in my head, considered this attempt to be not useful anymore and just finished the level anyway (It's a good practice to have when speedrunning that way you stay fluent with the entire level and don't freak out and get overnervous once you actually are doing well throughout).
[0:35] To create the "perfect walkway through foam" shot, I aim from the ground and fire an egg using a "checkmark" shot. Foam bends the direction eggs are flying towards depending on momentum and thus, creates the walkway.
[0:37] This easily was the most difficult aspect in this speedruns. Literally, hundreds of attempts had resets happen here. To explain, I fire an egg quickly at the shy guy holding the red coin, and then while still in the same jump, fire a second egg, doing a "Z-shape" shot that ricochets against the walls and red-eggs the "?" cloud containing 5 stars, producing 7 stars total.
[0:43] Despite what looks like I'm wasting time getting my aim correct for the flower above Yoshi, I have to let the star that transform Baby Mario dance for 1-1.5 seconds so I can fall beneath without getting hit by it.
[0:45] The most drastic change in this version of 2-3 100% versus the 2006 route is I skip the Baby Mario star entirely like in Spezz's TAS. This allows me to gain maxed out (6) eggs and have an enemy in Yoshi's mouth when approaching the foam maze ahead AND not have to wait for Baby Mario to untransform.
[0:52] Replicating this shot from Spezz's TAS, I "checkmark" shot against the pipe (which cave trolls hop out of to eat, so having max eggs here is required for this to work) which ricochets against the marble block near the egg towards the Red "!" Switch -- all with a single egg. Many things can go wrong here, "climbing" the ladder created by the shot too slowly will result in the fired egg traveling off-screen and failing to register hitting the "!" Switch; simply "climbing" the ladder too slowly; or missing the shot at the flower at the top of the "ladder."
[0:57] Ground pounding both columns of foam beneath the Red "!" Switch means Yoshi is touching foam throughout the action of ground pounding. This is important because this is the only scenario where you can cancel a ground pound before touching the ground. Of course no on ever notices something like this. ;)
[1:00] Firing the egg backwards is showing off. :)
[1:05] Memorizing when to turn around after firing the egg without failing to have the eggs touch the red coins off-screen cost many attempts. The only to find out is once I grab the two red coins afterward and not hearing the "all red coins obtained" chime.
[1:06] Totally showing off. You know you love it! :D
[1:19] I wanted to replicate the cool-shot Spezz does in his route by aiming an egg against curved surfaces and allowing it to ricochet to destroy the foam as he walks atop the foam. I believe I replicate it with cool-looking results!
[1:36] Ah, the backwards, no-momentum-lost shot! I did it on accident at some point, I believe around 5 hours of recorded failure. After doing it, I perfected it and knew I HAD to implement it into the final route. :)
Your yoshi's island skills are VERY impressive also i've been a fan of you for a while but i could never find your channel...i honestly didn't know you had one :( But i found you. so just letting you know to keep up the good work dude XD

Thank you. Look out for some new stuff eventually. I recently asked the subscribers on my channel a question concerning if they're interested in some past stuff that ins't as polished as the 2010 Yoshi's Island footage.

One day I'll get around to that infamous "100% Single-Segment" speedrun. But, realistically, I want to get this entire generation of 100% level improvements done before I attempt that. I'll be in much better condition then.
For now, hopefully, every few weeks, I'll try to get 1-2 levels done. Goal is to have 8 done before 2011. I think that's realistic enough.
