Hate to say this but you are full of shit.
The lights will not light if the voltage does not jump the gap. This is wried from high tension lead to spark plug cap. This also works on cars. It has never been wrong in over 10 years of use.

False claim,
High Voltage
does NOT guarantee spark if there is a problem with the plug or cylinder. Check out sparkplugsensor. The real deal.

if the machine runs, why would you check the spark?

@pivotboy63
1) you get to see the test lights run
2) If the machine had intermittent coil failure due to heat soak on the coil you can check for it just like in this video. Watch the lights as it runs and run the engine until the problem occurs. When the engine starts to die does it lose spark at the same time? If not then the issue could be vapor lock do to worn rings. and not a coil problem.

ign systems have to be healthy enough to fire plug under compression. typically simple test lights have been known to show spark even when ign. system is too weak to fire plug under compression. i prefer a tester thar requires spark to jump a wide gap they seem to be more reliable and accurate

This is wide gap. Spark has to jump plug gap Or short down the side of plug. It also has to have enough power to light the 3 neon filled glass bulbs.
This only tells the condition of the spark good, poor or none.
Now I only need to check 2 things.

It will also tell you if you lost gas first or spark
Lack of gas will keep test light lit but exhaust noise gets soft. If spark quits no light + soft exhaust. all so simple
