a villanelle - traditional form of poetry, with a strict pattern of rhyme and meter and repeat -

The Dance

We dance around your misery
just flick the skirts of your dismay
with your eyes shut you cannot see

As light of touch as we can be
in dark of night and light of day
we dance around your misery

If ever cut would set us free
if ever sunshine came our way
with your eyes shut you cannot see

The more your life becomes of me
more tightly bound than I can say
we dance around your misery

We are the lock we are the key
we are together come what may
with your eyes shut you cannot see

With fervour up and bended knee
with all the force of life at play
we dance around your misery
with your eyes shut you cannot see

I always try for layered meaning in my poetry - I like villanelles for their density, provided of course that the repeated words are strong enough. They are deceptively simple! Thanks for giving this one some of your time, James, I appreciate your response.

Google is where I started, having heard a villanelle by TheDisexists here on YouTube.

The poem is about self pity really, people who are self absorbed, and the way that those who love them have to adapt their lives constantly to fit around them. A strange love poem perhaps, but it takes all sorts!
