Zookeepers use target training with Matschie's tree kangaroos Kasbeth and her 1 ½ year old son Teptep. The 'roos are given treats when they touch their nose to the object on the end of the target. Training is enrichment for the animals and gives the keepers the opportunity to observe each animal closely. They receive some of their daily diet as a reward during their twice daily sessions.

This is the second offspring for mother Kasbeth and father Iri and the second tree roo ever to be born at the Saint Louis Zoo. The parents were paired under the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan for tree kangaroos.

This endangered tree kangaroo is a small marsupial found only in the thick, mountainous forests of Papua New Guinea, an island just south of the equator, north of Australia. A relative of terrestrial kangaroos, the reddish-brown and cream colored tree kangaroo also retains the legendary ability to jump. The tree kangaroo can leap as far as 30 feet from a tree to the ground. Read more about tree kangaroos at http://www.stlzoo.org/animals.

  • That is ADORABLE!!!

  • Very cute! <3

  • Tree Kangaroos were always my favorite animal since 2nd grade <3 <3 <3 <3 :)

  • These are my favorite animals at my local zoo. They do all sorts of unexpected things. They seem to be fans of biting each others tails when they are mad, strange.

  • These have to be the most cutest animals I've seen. I'd want one as a pet, but I wouldn't want it to be captive.

  • This one hell of an animal!! I just love how these guys locomote themselves, sometimes on two legs, sometimes on all fours, and move ther upper body.

  • Wow, I love these things, they became my second favourite animals ^^!
