  • Not just that...but I hope that you also incorporate Twitter/tweets comments in the participation mark? ...Or am I just being hopeful?

  • Nora, good point, but that adds quite a bit of time burden on me to check those and I just can't do it, monitoring the YouTube comments takes a lot of extra time (that very very few other profs do), allowing emails also takes time cause I have to read these extra ones too

  • I agree but sometimes just because I choose not to participate doesnt mean I have not learned anything just and vice versa … because someone participates doesnt necessarily mean that they have learned something either, they could just repeat something they heard in class and not absorb the meaning itself. It can really go both ways here.

  • true, but I have to have some "evidence" to go on, and most students tell me that by allowing participation to be earned these extra ways fits with the "digital" way I teach and the topics I teach

  • For instance, sometimes people raise their hands in class and say something silly..but they still get a mark for that. I now understand that you are just trying to teach us that it is important to stand out in a positive way because we live in a competitive world. I also really appreciate the fact that we can e-mail you or make comments on your youtube videos to gain participation marks.

  • "you are just trying to teach us that it is important to stand out in a positive way" - yes

    "De gustibus non est disputandum"

    - besides, in my int'l business classes, many things are personal opinions and you can't be wrong in your opinion cause....."De gustibus non est disputandum"

  • One problem I see with giving marks for comments in class is the resulting random anecdotes we have to hear from people who don't have something constructive to say. Making a comment on a subject just for the sake of getting their voice heard, isn't always beneficial to the rest of the class.

Students should be encouraged to have thoughtful or meaningful comments that benefit the discussion. This is sometimes contradicted by students just trying to "score points". Ben D. MRK 460 MT

  • Class participation is an extremely easy way to get marks and to boost your grade, but like doing any other thing in a course, you cannot procrastinate. By procrastinating you are only hurting yourself and deadlines seem to have a way of sneaking up on you if you are not careful. Participating is both easy and a fun way to get marks. Just remember to do it on a regular basis.

  • In one of my other CCT courses we had in-class assignments relating to what we covered that class. It was helpful because we would discuss the material with our peers.

  • I think you should make a wiki for this course in which students can contribute to the course content and have ongoing discussions between them to enhance the learning experience. With that being said I think the current class participation system is fair and in the end it's up to the student to earn those marks.

  • Participation marks are definitely important. What I like about the class participation mark system in this class is that there are several ways to do it. You can do it through sending E-mails, commenting on videos, putting hand up in class, or making your own video. So if someone is too shy to talk in class, then he or she can send E-mails. etc.

What I also find important is that the mark is given depending on how useful the information shared is.

  • Continuation..not feel pressured to say something intelligent that will be a correct answer to something you've asked really encourages students to participate more often and share their insight. I encourage you to continue giving your students such options and opportunities because I guarantee your students take away at least 1 thing from every class.
