First off, it's a matter of efficiency. Transporting everything separately still costs substantial amounts of energy (I surmise it's the reason giant separation plants exist)
Second, even if you do separate it, in most areas, someone is going to pick it all up, dump it into a singular container, then transport it to a giant separation facility. It's not a matter of not being eco-friendly, I'm just alerting people to the fact that even with minimal effort, they can do some good.
There's actually no need (in most places) to separate your recyclables. Typically, all the recyclables are dumped into a single container and shipped to a giant plant where a machine the size of a foot-ball field separates everything, then it is all crushed and bundles into 1-2 ton cubes.
