Business Proposal: The Fresh Food Fridge Assistant

The Fresh Food Fridge Assistant uses innovative technology to remind households of food that is going to spoil so that they can use it before the expiration date rather than let it go to waste. The product consists of a touch screen and a bar code scanner and can easily be installed to the front of any refrigerator door. Users can scan their groceries and enter their corresponding expiration dates before they put them into the refrigerator. This way, the screen will know exactly what items are in the fridge and is able to remind the user which products need to be used by when. When an item is either expired or used up, the user can dump the product and add it to their grocery list if they so desire. This grocery list can then be sent to either a cell phone, a printer, or to The Fresh Food Fridge Assistant Team who will do grocery shopping for the user and deliver the order to their home. Another benefit of the touch screen is that users can browse the fridges contents along with nutritional information without even having to open their fridge. They can also browse a list of built in recipes and add needed ingredients to their shopping list.

Some added features to the touch screen are applications such as weather, an mp3 player, sports scores, stock reports, a calendar/planner, movie times; and a television with a built in DVR and DVD player. All of these features make life more convenient for the busy lifestyles of todays society. Instead of turning on their laptop before work to check the weather, a user can press a single button and look at it while eating breakfast.

Currently there are no refrigerators or touch screens on the market that can do exactly what the Fresh Food Fridge Assistant can. Designer Kim Otto, however, made a prototype of a fridge that can notify users what is in their fridge using an RFID reader and tags. However, according to MacManus, Until RFID tags that connect to the cloud become more common place on food items, the internet fridge is yet another product looking for a solution (MacManus, 2009). Since bar codes are already found on most food items, the Fresh Food Fridge Assistant would be much easier to implement. Some other competitors on the market are The LG TV Refrigerator which has a 15 TV along with a DVD connection, FM radio, a weather display, the date and time, a calendar with an alarm, a recipe collection and a photo album; The Siemens CoolMedia Fridge which is very similar to the LG TV Refrigerator except that its screen can swivel out; and The Electrolux Screen Fridge. The Electrolux Screen Fridge consists of features such as the internet, email, phone, radio, an MP3 player, a personal organizer, and a weather and traffic conditions checker (Refrigerators, 2006).

The Fresh Food Fridge Assistant is in the consumer electronics industry. From 2009 to 2010, revenue is expected to increase by 0.6% from $164.9 billion to $166.0 billion (Industry Sales Statistics Overview, 2009). Other products within the industry are televisions, computers, gaming systems, and mobile audio/video devices (Souers, 2009).

According to a study done by the University of Arizona in 2004, the average American Family throws away 14% of the food they purchase, which includes about $600 worth of refrigerated goods per year. The fresh food fridge assistant will help reduce this waste as well as save families money in these tough economical times (US Wastes Half Its Food, 2004).
