2 years ago I got a cheap tenor out of interest, having played alto for a year or so. The first tune I played and recorded was this, and I uploaded it onto youtube. That video is no longer up (it was a bit... raw) so I decided to have another go. This tune is great because there are few "rules" over the phrasing and timing of the head, everyone plays or sings it differently. I hope you enjoy it.....Chet Baker's vocal version is one of the tunes that got me interested in Jazz as a "kid" of about 16..... such a great version... Chet was not the "greatest" singer, but he had a very heartfelt delivery.

  • Nice!

From the description I understand you've only been playing the sax for 3 years? Pretty impressive.

  • 3 years, but 25 years on jazz guitar, which helps a huge amount, I couldn't do this without that listening, playing and practicing experience..... Thanks for the kind words

  • Great introspective sound, Matthew. This is one of the most beautiful ballads and also one of the saddest. Angel Eyes, This Masquerade, and Willow Weep For Me seem to have that same aura.

I thought I'd get back into playing now the summer farmwork is over, but Dad passed away and I'm settling his affairs. Hopefully, later.

Love your music and glad to see you're having fun playing live. You deserve to be heard.

  • Hi Laurence, sorry to hear about your Dad....

It is good to hear you are OK, I was getting worried, but I know you have a big job to do with all that land. I am glad you like this one, I think my favourite tune. I like Willow too, but I struggle to make it interesting, so that tune rarely gets played. It would be nice to do a duet on something, maybe just send me an mp3 of something interesting when you are ready....

It is great to hear from you!

  • You are such a natural player. Your feel is immaculate. Jim

  • Thanks Jim, much appreciated. I was born with some natural talent for music, that is true....as a kid I played all kinds of instruments from the french horn to the flute and sang in a lot of choirs.....it all helps. I have to thank my parents for that.

  • such a brilliant rendition, its so relaxing to hear you play i regularly just have your videos playing the background when im on the computer

  • Your ballad playing is so inspiring - I mean - I've just caught myself totally admiring your variating use of vibrato... sometimes so subtle - and your use of very soft playing - I like it very much! And the contrasting use of colour vs b&w background - very original! :) Thanks again for sharing one of your marvellous videos:)
