Tori serves as the "narrator" of the piece through her song storytelling and omniscient presence. The male character represents God, man, a father. As the male, he is portrayed as weak: he is easily persuaded, and falls for women and other indulgences. However, despite his weaknesses, he is not without religious conviction, shown as worshipping a male deity. The female character represents his daughter, who understands from the past that her father is powerful as a man, but now she is coming of age -- believing she can take on the God/power role. Through observing her father, she has learned power and is confident that a woman can also command this role.
In the film reels and old footage, the man sees his own life and his own indulgences -- a world that is about to come to an end. The daughter, through killing him, now has the power over the world -- over man.
The setting is meant to present the female and male in an old home in the deep south -- a house filled with family history and perhaps disturbing, unspoken secrets from the past. The different looks the female achieves through wig and dress symbolize her newfound chameleon status -- she can be anyone or anything she needs to be for survival: the leader, the manipulator, the businesswoman. She can now play the world as it has probably played her. The male's death commences her reign and "washing away" the dirty, oppressive past.
