A early prototype build of Doom for the 32X, dated Sep 09, 1994.

This one is unique in that it has different music from the final version (no sfx though), along with extra graphics/textures and fullscreen gameplay. Judging by this, it's easy to see why they shrunk the screen down for the final version. This one gets really laggy and choppy when enemies are on the screen.

This was also recorded in an emulator (Kega Fusion), because it's checksum isn't correct, thus it won't run on an actual 32X. I could just fill out the rest of the rom with 0's to get it to match, but I have better things to do. :p

Also, thanks to http://www.hidden-palace.org for making these available!

  • @mjdoomreviews I have the link posted towards the bottom of the description over to the left.

Unfortunately you can't post links in youtube comments, otherwise I'd give you a direct link. Just add "/?releases/98" to the end of the link on the left to go directly to the page.

  • This music was played on a xylophone.

  • @kanfor The beta gets laggy when there is a lot of action/enemies....that is why they used a mini-screen for the final release.

  • better music

but no sound effects and choppier than the original D:

  • Holy shit music is better!

  • lookds better than final but lower framerate.

  • Man this looks laggier than the SNES version and with even a lower resolution. Although I can't say that the control response is worse in this version.

  • I wish we could hear from the makers of doom for 32x so they can explain why the port turned out as it did. It wasn't as horrible as most people say, since it was still doom and was still very playable, and was superior to the snes, but it was far from what it could have been.

  • @xxashyy Sorry, but the snes version haven´t got floor.

  • Full screen? why? The final version is crop! This version is better!

  • @killkenny5000 Actually the 32X and the Jaguar port are the original console ports of DOOM. They were developed together side by side and use a lot of the same code. In the source code for Jaguar DOOM you can see parts of the code sectioned off that say "If 32X do this instead."

SNES was handled by another team and uses a very different engine.
