The feature-length documentary The End of Poverty? won critical acclaim at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and is narrated by actor Martin Sheen. It is a daring, thought-provoking and very timely documentary by filmmaker Philippe Diaz. The film takes a hard look at world poverty and challenges capitalism and the American way. In a world of plenty, why are so many families around the planet still living in abject poverty? Looking beyond the popular "solutions" for poverty, The End of Poverty? asks if the true causes of poverty today stem from a deliberate orchestration of resource misallocation started in colonial times.

  • though oddly enough there IS enough money to fund the proposed £70million upgrade to the UK trident missile system, and the cost so far of the afghanistan conflict of over £2.5bn.

Seems to be an issue of priorities.

  • This whole system we are living in is totally wrong for 99% of the population.

"The rich get richer and the poor get poorer"

Maybe a Zeitgeist movement is the solution but it takes enormous effort by the common citizens to say no to the material thinking, selfishness, old traditions etc.

  • Poverty and Extreme Poverty in America and the rest of the World comes from a lack of investment from the Private Sector. As well into the Private Sector. And a lack of quality educational and employment opportunity's. As well as corruption.

  • It is all managed wrong. it can be resolved in one day.

  • Poverty only exists because of patent rights. A patent grant does not give the barer the right to produce, distribute, sell, export or imports something, it just gives them the right to prohibit everyone else from doing so, and that alone is enough to keep most people employed instead of self employed. At the same time, state and local governments conspire to impose further conditions and restrictions on our freedom to engage in free trade- zoning, licensing, permits, insurance, bonding, etc.

  • long overdue should be highly prized ...

  • Hope this movie gets its European wide release and comes to Ireland!!!!

  • I have no idea who you're replying to. For me, youtube isn't showing the staggered form of who's response is a reply to another.

    Regardless, I agree.

  • No, he's advocating capitalism and not realizing that removing the value of resources does not negate our need for them.

  • Utopia is a "perfect place" (i.e. ideal system). Do you know what ideal is or the standard of ideal? If you do, then can you make +6B people follow it?

In an abstract sense, it won't work. So, maybe make it practical enough then. But no matter what, utopia is a place of no conflict and thus requires conformity among all people.

If you mean that we can live in a better world, then yeah, I'm on board for that.

  • If we use democracy as an abstract, then of course there will be some delusion when applied.

In a practical sense, I believe democracy is still alive and not delusional. I think the problem is that we're going away from a democratic system to a whole new on. The question - are people of aware of this transition?

The thing about an illusion is not whether you are aware of it, but if you know how to escape it.
