This is my departure from Somerville, NJ (Somerset Airport, KSMQ). I departed VFR and activated my IFR flight plan in the air. This is normally not an issue for me, but this video shows how easily one can get knocked off one's game.
Keep in mind that I'm not familiar with northern New Jersey. (Well, not any of New Jersey, really) The controller issued me a non-standard clearance using a VOR name without the identifier. Even though I asked for the identifier, he never provided it which left me searching my chart to find the one correct VOR from the many in the area to start my route. Needless to say, the controller appeared to be slightly annoyed.
Oh well. I'm sure he got over it. The controller in the next sector was much friendlier to deal with, so that made up for it on my end. :)

This is my home area ..im based at an airport a few miles to the SE from ksmq..I fly this airspace a few times a week and i deal with that controller numerous times..he can seem a little irritated at times..Ive actually had him apologize to me for vectoring me all over the state because of the Newark arrivals..but that was only one time..happy flying!
