there may be truth to the hidden art claim as yemenis were not allowed musical instruments so they improvised ,ofra haza yemenite songs of my ancestors,so they wouldnt have been allowed to practice martial arts either except in secret-all arts come from elsewhere,so all arts are mixed-in silat we have moves that are from the greeks and persians, particularly grappling
I mean for crying out loud man, do you think dirt poor Yemenites in Israel had the time to teach their kids or grandkids how to fight some ancient hand to hand fighting style that uses javelins and swords in a modern society that hated anything non-western ?
Trust me, it's quite reasonable that there aren't any elders left. It's a handful at best that still know any of this stuff solid. And there are at most two people teaching any of it. Yehoshua Sofer is one, and his brother is the other.
Fourth, you speak about "other elders". This isn't some giant clan of 50,000 screaming Temani Jews waving swords. It's at most a few hundred families who were living in the city of Haban in Yemen. The rest of the Yemenite Jews forgot everything over their 2000+ year exile.
The remainder came to Israel and were introduced to modern cultural assimilation. Wiping out anything non-European was very popular up until about 20 years ago when the leftists finally lost power.
Third, what habani said about sneezing was accurate. Just because someone somewhere figures out how to do something properly, it does not mean that the first guy got it from the second.
These movements are natural and they work. It's logical that someone else could figure out by accident what we know from tradition. Everyone and their kid brother thinks we got some move from them, you wouldn't believe how far this goes.
Third, you speak about translation. Which language do you suggest we translate it to? French? English? Russian? We have equal numbers of students who primarily speak each of those languages.
And consider this, it's not enough to speak a language, you have to think in it. That means we need people fluent in Hebrew and in the translating language. I'm NOT fluent in both, neither are any of the other volunteers. And we don't have the money to hire writers.
First of all, he does teach some of this to outsiders. Just not the main stuff that can get people killed.
Secondly, the videos are there primarily so that Jews will see and get into it. Also, this stuff really does need to be documented because it's an important part of Jewish history and culture. Too much has already been lost. If it were up to me, I and everyone else studying this would happily force him to videotape everything.
