Weighing a large sapphire found on a recent trip to Cherokee Ruby Mine in Franklin, North Carolina. In addition to being one of the only native (unsalted) mines remaining in the area, it is also run by the most wonderful and helpful folks in the world-- really a great place to visit!

  • If you are at a mine, ask to see samples before starting, and be sure to completely clean the dirt in your screen. Remember that sapphires will often have a six-sided shape and are heavier than other stones.
