The world is full of places remote, awesome and difficult to get to: the deepest points on the bottom of the sea, the most-hidden corners of the world's great forests, the driest expanses of Earth's most inhospitable deserts, the summits of its loftiest peaks. Fifty-five-year-old Wendy Booker knows what it takes to earn entry to realms like these, as she has, over the last decade, successfully struggled to reach the tops of each continent's tallest mountain. Along the way, she has undergone a strenuous regimen of training that includes having run in nine marathons. And she has balanced all this with a full-time career and family.
Wendy is a woman of accomplishments that would make any person her age proud, and her achievements make for an interesting story of surpassing physical discipline and mental determination. But what makes her story uniquely touching and inspiring is that she has accomplished all this since she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a decade ago. That fact makes her journey something special: a psychological and spiritual exploration to places deep inside the human soul. And she's not done yet. Next stop? The Polar Trilogy.
"I use remote places as metaphors for the obstacles we all encounter in life," Wendy says, "and I want to inspire others - especially young people - not to see obstacles as insurmountable, but more as challenges to navigate over and around. We all have extreme obstacles in our lives and we cannot let them stop us! It's all about attitude. Even the most severely challenged can move forward with the right attitude."
Over the course of this program, we will follow Wendy Booker as she submits her body and mind to a brutal training regimen, and then accompany her to the ends of the earth to chronicle her attempt to get to the frozen polar destinations that have meant exhaustion, failure and even death for so many that have gone before. Along the way, we will learn Wendy explores to inspire all those with MS to make living lives of challenge and hardship an undertaking no different from conquering the world's polar extremes, an endeavor that in itself makes life worthwhile.
