Oakland Park Main Street commissioned artist Frank Ciccio to paint an expansive mural depicting Jaco Pastorius, his influences, and one contemporary. Located on the east and west walls of the Jaco Pastorius Community Center beside the storied Dixie Highway, Ciccio was assisted in erecting the scaffolding, then proceeded to single-handedly complete an impressive amount of his design from April to July of 2009. Near the completion of the piece, he was fired and the fruits of his labors painted over in a single afternoon. This slide show attempts to convey an idea of the scale, chronology, and aftermath of a tribute to Jaco.

  • In the end , i hope it comes out great. I just wish they hadn't wasted so much of my time making endless unsolicited promises and showing no accountability for their constant neurotic blunders and yeah that includes the big B.

  • they decided it wasn´t good enough. And i Agree, is wasn´t, the details not good, and it was´nt a good representation of Jaco, and look at the trumpet?? I think it would be good to a school work, but not for a thousand dollars Mural.

  • he made hendrix look like ronald mc donald

  • jaco did not look like an imbecile caveman.

This "artist" should work as a car repairman or something , not art of this magnitude

  • @RatchetGUN at the end they painted over it saying it was to cartoonish, they did however paint something else that looks more like jaco but at the same time they did not allow him to finish the mural

  • Mainstreet (who planned the mural and hired Ciccio) told me for 8 months that I would be painting this mural. I made several concepts based on thier ideas - the final one they loved when i brought it in. I learned once again that endless talk can be a great sign of wasted time. Mainstreet wasted lots of my time making strange promises about this Mural project. Anyway , my layout of their chosen figures can be seen on my site - link on my profile here.

  • I was contacted to assist on this mural in June 09 but the Artist could not agree with those who had hired him. They told me he disapeared and asked me to finish the mural. Asking me to come in for many meetings for months on end during the summer 09 and Fall and beyond , i'd made a rendering of their new desires finally when they allowed me to begin a new concept .

  • I believe Gregory should do the mural.

  • @arturcarneiro - try over $20,000 . This is a case of incredible incompetemce on the part of those who hired a person whos website shows that he has no experience in portrait or figure or musician art. Nothing against Mr. Ciccio the artist here but this type of art is not his genre. Unfortunately those who work at 'Mainstreet' seem to have no experience at all in the real world of actually getting projects done right . It will be interesting to see if they fail the 2nd time.

  • What happened at the end? :'(
