(cont.) take her in. Please and thank you in advance, to anyone and everyone with information regarding this issue.

(cont...) worried or not. Also, we took her to an emergency vet shortly before it started because she was staggering around the yard, and it was hard for her to walk, as if she was drunk. The vet said maybe she was just dehydrated, so they gave her water and a few shots (I don't remember what for, exactly), and she seemed totally fine for about a week. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm really worried, but money is REALLY tight right now, and I want to be at least somewhat sure before we

This may take multiple posts, but bear with me, please. My dog's belly has been big for a few weeks now, maybe over a month, and seemed otherwise perfectly fine. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but more recently, she's been breathing *somewhat* heavily, but not like she just ran around outside kind of heavily. Gas is DEFINITELY not trapped, and has had bowel movements, but I'm worried anyway. Since it doesn't seem to be crucial considering how long it's been, I was wondering if I should still be

Thank you Monique for the wonderful information. I too had never heard of this until we almost lost our dog...fortunately there was an emergency clinic nearby and yes, we avoided surgery but not before a lot of pain and discomfort for Max....all good. Thanks again!

I was in 7th or 8th grade and my mom called me in the middle of the school day to tell me my dog (A german Shepherd)Brutus died I literally broke down in the middle of the school office crying and i was hurt even more that our vet said "He died from Bloat" and we never heard of it.
So thank you for posting this video. More people and vets need to talk about this disease.

ummm....tbwj21....think of it this way. every time you get into a car you have the potential to get into a car accident. And generally this would be considered an emergency.
And to Monique, thank you for a most informative video. We''ve had a few close calls with bloat with some of our dogs and it is scary not only how common this is but how many people don't have a clue what it is! They play really hard with their dogs after eating...ugh. Keep fighting the good fight and educating us!
thanks!
Hello ShyBoy. Is your dog on heartworm prevention? Of course, i don't know your location and if you have heartworm disease in your area but that is the first ting that jumps into my mind. The other thing is it can be a tumor or heart failure.
Unfortunately, a work up is needed to diagnose your kid.
Good luck!

You say it's an emergency? If this is something that can happen each and every time your dog eats, or plays around with someone, then how can it be an emergency?? Are you trying to say every single time a dog gets bloat, that it needs to be taken in? That's absurd; mainly because there is no 'fix' for it, just a surgical procedure to fix it that one time... These 'vets' or dog 'pros' need to get their education from school, not the internet.. Maybe then they will make since or find a cure.

@tbwj21
Actually, it is you that needs the education. I already got mine in the field.
Yes, if your dog's abdomen blows up like a balloon and your dog is pacing around, panting and trying to vomit, it is most likely an emergency.
If the dog has surgery there is a very high percentage that he/she will NOT bloat again in the future.

We never heard of this problem before. My brothers dog was staying with us, he was 13 years old, and suffered this problem. We thought he was nauseated from his dog food, later we found out it was this bloating. He had to be put to sleep today. He was a very nice Bassett Hound. I searched the internet after this happened, and learned that bloating is the 2nd leading killer of dogs (behind only Cancer). Its so sad, because he was here and seemed ok last night. But got much worse today.

@Timothy17Fan
I'm so sorry you had to go through that.
Spread the word because not enough people know about bloat or what to look for!

A Boston Terrier was transferred to our hospital this am after getting into the garbage which also had raw onions in it. He went to the ER because he was bloating but by this am he went into cardiac arrest twice & went into a coma. We put him to sleep and the owners were devastated
He bloated from eating garbage and he was poisoned by the raw onions.
This was an 8 year old dog.
They are never too old to get into trouble.
These owners will never forgive themselves
Don't let this happen to you!
