Thousands of ships litter the floors of the five Great Lakes. In Lake Erie alone, hundreds have been found and hundreds more are waiting to be discovered. One of the ships recently located has been identified with near certainty as the Riverside, a 133-foot-long schooner built in 1870. The Riverside is located about 25 miles north of Cleveland in about 80 feet of water. The schooner had been located originally by two divers in the 1980s but its location was never released. It came up on the sidescan and the dimensions were right," said team member Tom Kowalczk of the Riverside. "It's pretty much intact with rigging and deadeyes. It's all there."
The Riverside left Kelleys Island on Friday, Oct. 13, 1893, with a cargo of stone and bound for New York. Mr. VanZandt said the three-masted schooner hit a storm and was lost into the waves. All seven people on board, including the ship master and his wife, were presumed dead.
