C-SPAN Washington Journal Response to Black Caller Issue

From the 4/1/10 Washington Journal, C-SPAN Co-President Susan Swain addresses the issue of a caller who complained of too many black callers on the program. Here's her complete statement: "Before we close out here; this program has been taking a thumping since Monday about a caller that we had from North Carolina who said that we air too many black callers on this program. The response by the person sitting at this table was unfortunate in that it made it sound like we concurred with that caller. We do not. We like to hear from all voices here. We have been for 30 years. So bring it on folks, wed like to hear from all of you."

I felt bad for the CSPAN host who got that caller. I could tell he was uncomfortable. And I don't think he was condoning it, I just thought that he was a bit shocked that someone would call in to say that.

I have personally called in a bunch on this show and actually was on the air...Try an experiment, watch this show everyday for a month and see how many calls they answer from the 'Independent' line, I'll tell you...NONE NONE NONE...I had to call in on the other lines to get through

I don't think the point was that there were a lot of black callers, but black democrats calling the Republican line pretending to be Republicans for the screeners, then praising Obama when they got to talk. So was the caller racist? Maybe. But his point was people shouldn't fake political leanings when they call and even the host seemed to agree with him.
