Junior middie Taylor Brooks, senior attackman Turner Harris and senior middie George Drogaris each scored three goals and added three assists to lead the Cy-Fair Ironmen to an 18-13 victory over Highland Park II in the Texas High School Lacrosse League Division II championship game May 6 in Dallas. This is the Ironmen's first State Championship in its 17 seasons.
"It was a total team effort, because we scored 18 goals and we didn't have a single kid with more than three," Cy-Fair Coach Chris Wilke said. "Everybody did everything we worked on all season. It was executing the game plan and finishing strong. It was something that was fun to watch."
North District champion Highland Park II had their 11-game winning streak snapped by the underdog Ironmen. Key saves in the fourth quarter by goalies Ethan Bogart and AJ Hernandez helped to seal the victory, as well as four straight goals to finish off the game.
Cy-Fair was undefeated in D-II regular season play, reeling off 13 straight victories, but suffered an upset in the championship game of the South District tournament. However, the team got a second try after they were selected as the wild-card entry into the state tournament. "We've been working for this for three years," Mann said. "It's a dream come true."
Individual player awards went to Cy-Falls senior George Drogaris as overall MVP, and to Cy-Creek junior Michael Mann as offensive MVP. Lacrosse is a club sport in Texas. The Cy-Fair Ironmen draw players from the entire Cy-Fair School District and are not associated with a specific high school.
