Here is an example of one of the more notable insects that live in the sub-arctic. The name of the beetle is, White Spotted Wood Sawyer. Easily identified by their ridiculously long antennae. They fly low and as a result many people encounter them. The beetle tends to see humans as a landing pad of sorts. If you hold them close to your ear, they actually emit a squeaking sound as they rub the back of the head underneath the thorax. I couldn't record it as it is a very soft sound. During the brief hot periods during summer in the interior of Alaska many can be seen flying around. They can bite, but only if you hold them incorrectly. Really these beetles are harmless. Locals in Fairbanks call them "Moose Lice" and often these insects scare the hell out people.
