be sure to look at the 2nd quarter video to the right.

First Quarter:

The slight bit of pregame footage shows UT running out of the tunnel "with hopes of a national championship" only to be met by Miami taunting at midfield. The opening kickoff fielded by Chris Samuels and smashed by Robert Bailey set the tone for a long day, but UT kept fighting. Butch Hadnot had 117 yards in the game with several impressive runs, especially on pitches. UT should have fed him the ball about 35 times to keep Miami off Gardere who was sacked 9 times that day.

In this first quarter, on a punt, a UT OL # 77 Shea Shafie is driven out of bounds into the Miami sideline which earns the Canes 2 penalties and the famous 1st and 40, which they easily convert. We see NFL veteran Leon Searcy toss Oscar Giles on this drive. UT manages to keep Miami to a FG despite Miami's progress into the UT 20. 3-0 by Carlos Huerta.

The KO sees Willie Mack Garza slip on a wet turf which was also frozen in parts. Hadnot running hard throughout the game. Stanley Richard then has a near INT which would have made it 7-3 changing the momentum but Miami drives down to get another Huerta FG , 6-0.

Gardere is then abused by Russell Maryland with sack after sack and UT punts. Brian Jones gets into an altercation with a couple of Miami OL who then abuse him on the sideline pass play with a push in the back , earning yet another penalty. UT gets the ball back and Gardere fumbles on Maryland's sack setting up the first Miami TD; a pass to Wesley Carrol who fakes out UT #43 , backup defensive back Todd Ringo. Up 12-0 they fail on the 2pt conversion , an inconsequential pick dropped by Mark Berry.

So far, UT defense has played well, bend but not break and victimized by the TOs and great Miami field position.

  • Ohio State had the officials hand it to them. That penalty in the 02 Fiesta Bowl shouldn't have been called.

I don't like Miami, but I don't know how they didn't beat Ohio State down. Ohio State wasn't the best team in 02, but the luckiest.

  • We probably would have lost anyway, they were just a better team than us.

m2diggs is exactly right, some of the Texas players were trashing Miami before the game. NOT a good idea, it won't bode well for you. I won't go so far and say Miami was justified, but Texas sure didn't help themselves.

Whatever misgivings I have about the Miami program (and I'm far from the only one), if you trash talk your opponent you get what you deserve.

Texas has not made this mistake since. Hook Em!

  • why can't the cotton bowl still be at cotton bowl stadium and the national championship be at cotton bowl stadium every 4 years, in other words the cotton bowl has more tradition then the fiesta bowl

  • Touchdown Miami! No greater words have ever been spoken.

  • The U wow 30 for 30

  • Texas get's a beat down and well deserved, jerks.

  • The game was over from the get go. Once we watched them come out the tunnel...the game was already won!!

  • @johnnyfive222

And despite those losses.. The aforementioned Miami team has a winning record against every school in the state of Florida and as many national championship trophies as the other two of the big three combined.

    Stay thirsty my friends.

  • @jmoon219

wow stay classy Miami. Says a team who lost to all the florida teams including south florida last year. Not only lost but got whooped

  • SMU vs Miami would have interesting if SMU kept their program up but Miami kept SMU from recruiting in South Florida.

  • "Aye! I'mma run down here and knockout whoever returns the kick." Robert Bailey.

  • My god.......the Canes ripped apart Texas.
