Dave Nelson, a young man from Wisconsin, moves to New York City to become the News Director of a radio station. Quickly, his first day turns chaotic. The first of his obstacles for the day is to deal with his eccentric boss Jimmy James, who's first assignment for Dave is to fire his predecessor. In the meantime, Dave meets the other employees of the office. While meeting his new co-workers he must; settle arguments between the on-air talents Bill McNeal and Catherine Duke, gain the respect of his quirky secretary Beth and street reporter Matthew, and confront a loyal and longtime station employee Lisa Miller, who thinks she is the next News Director.
Stephen Root's favorite part of the pilot is when he shows Dave there are no strings on the tennis racket by placing his head through it.
The network really wanted Dave to show some authority over his workers which is the reason for the outburst at Bill over the Al Gore story.
Originally Lisa was supposed to be slutty and flirting with her new boss Dave, instead they have a building romance throughout the series.
Paul Simms wanted Dave Foley, Andy Dick and Phil Hartman as their respective characters. Stephen Root almost didn't get the chance to audition because originally Mr. James was supposed to be in his mid 50s and was not written in to be so involved with the staff.
Maura Tierney was the last person cast the morning of the table read in front of the network.
Ella Joyce played Catherine Duke in the pilot. From episode 2 up to the character's departure, Khandi Alexander portrayed Catherine.
Ed(Kurt Fuller) mentions he is late because of traffic on the "freeway." Since the show takes place in New York not Los Angeles, he should have used a different word. e.g. Highway/Parkway.
The end tag scene between Dave and Lisa was shot three months/three episodes later, the writers thought there should of been a better moment between Dave and Lisa so they re-shot that scene. Also Dave Foley came up with the bit about Lisa's straying eyelash.
Ray Ramano(Everybody Loves Raymond) was originally cast in the role of the handyman(named "Rick" in the pilot and called "Joe" from episode 2 up.) Ray was fired during the filming of the pilot and Greg Lee was brought in as a fill-in simply to finish the filming of the pilot.
The character Jimmy James takes his name from the Beastie Boys song of the same name.
The character Beth's name was taken from the hit love ballad "Beth" by the band Kiss.
