It's been a while since I've done an honest to goodness beer review, being that I've been sick, but I thought that I would get the good times back rolling with a bang, and by bang I mean an Imperial Stout, and by Imperial Stout I mean Southern Tier's Mokah Imperial Stout.
In my opinion Southern Tier Brewery is the king of Imperial Beers right now. While a lot of their standards like their Raspberry Wheat, Phin & Matt's Extraordinary Ale, and their most recent attempt at a Summer Beer, the Hop Sun falls flat, their Imperials are incredible, and the Mokah is no exception.
Like most Imperials by Southern Tier the alcohol volume is high, and this one stands at 11.0% ABV, pretty much what a dessert wine might be, and I like to think of this beer as a perfect dessert beer. Essentially the Mokah is a combination of the Southern Tier Choklat and the Javah, their Chocolate and Coffee Stout, respectively.
As with most Imperials the head is minimal and dissipates quickly (I drank the rest of this beer later, with a more aggressive pour and there was a cloudier head present, but that quickly dissipated as well).
My first impressions of this beer we very nice. You got the bittersweet chocolate hints as well as almost a espresso blend of coffee as well. The alcohol was very subdued, but you knew it was in there waiting for you. When I take my first sip I feel all warm and happy, and that's not just because of the alcohol. This beer reminds me of a Guinness, and despite the high alcohol volume, this beer is surprisingly session-able (however, I'm sure if you had two of these in a row you would be on your ass).
I served this beer at a temperature at right around 46-50 degrees, and as the beer continued to warm in my glass I began to get hints of butterscotch, and whipped butter (like what you would find in a tub).
All in all, this beer is fantastic, a one of a kind beer, from a one of a kind brewery. This beer gets two big thumbs up, and that's not just because I was feeling pretty good after one glass of this brew.
Sorry, no movie pairing this time, but I will have one next time. I mentioned Chocolat, the movie with Johnny Depp, but I think I was pretty much talking out of my ass.
I had this beer over the weekend.......epicness in a glass

@novabeerfly Yeah man, its spectacular. I find this beer to be the perfect balance. Not too sweet, not too bitter, but perfect.

If it's less bitter than Young's then this is right up my alley. I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't think Young's Double Chocolate Stout is that great. I'm going to have to seek this one out... specially since it has an espresso/Cuban coffee maker on the label.
Oh and thanks for the shout out. I'm drinking my second a Gubna right now, it really is an impressive beer. I'm still a lil backed up with the videos so give that review a week or two before it uploads. Thanks again, and Cheers!
