@diego12102 It was a flat engine nicknamed "pancake". It sat under the floor on the rear axle. I once had to swap out my engine temporarily, & it was a piece of cake: It helped to have 2 of us but we just needed a floor jack. Some of the other vids you can find using "VW squareback variant" will show you.

This is what I loved about my Variant. I could stuff so much in it! Two trunks -- brilliant idea!
I'd be glad if I could get a modernized version if my old Variant now, you know, just like my old one but with an upgraded version of that fantastic engine, the extraordinary engineering that didn't waste a single cubic inch of space and the clean, simple functionality. That car was a great ride and it's a great memory.
