I am a speaker designer, the real McCoy. Haven't tried the trick but it could nevertheless work. Shorting the output of an Ipod or other headphone output jack is not a real short. There is a limiting resistor on the output and when you then short it, then current is generated that will go through the coin.

It is current going through the coin and its mass that will vibrate the foil.

DO NOT DO THIS WITH AN AMPLIFIER DESIGNED TO DRIVE SPEAKERS AS THEY HAVE NO CURRENT LIMITING! IT WILL BLOW UP.
