2009 "So You Think You're Thrifty" contest finalist- Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida
Name: Amanda Gutierrez
Home: Fort Myers
About: Amanda started thrift shopping when she was in high school, when her parents made her work for everything
she wanted. She found that she could buy designer items on a dime at thrift stores. As a single mom with three kids, she still watches every penny, and tells" us that she plans way ahead, and still uses every spending lesson she learned as a teenager. She makes purchases for herself, her family, and even buys supplies for her job at Goodwill.
She also tells us that when she goes on vacation, she checks out the Goodwill stores everywhere she goes for souvenirs.
Quote: I have to control myself. If I go shopping, I have to bring a bag of donations with me, and if the kids want something, they need to give me three things to donate back.

  • You go girl! I am an avid thrift store shopper too! We have some really awesome ones in Chicago! I'm hoping to make my own videos soon too with my friend SJ (my thrifty partner in crime)! I'm so proud of you that you teach your kids how to manage money...such an important lesson! I had to pay my way through college and purchase all of my stuff and it was the best thing ever that my parents let me learn how to budget all that and didn't just hand it to me!
