On Oct. 17, he had resigned as chairman of Livestrong, but had retained a board seat.Katherine McLane, a Livestrong spokeswoman, said via the Associated Press that Armstrong, a survivor of testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs, "remains the inspiration" for the charity and is its largest donor, contriburing nearly $7 million.Jeff Garvey, the new chairman of Livestrong, said in a statement, new board chairman Jeff Garvey said Armstrong stepped resigned from the board to spare the organization any negative effects resulting from the controversy surrounding his cycling career."Lance Armstrong was instrumental in changing the way the world views people affected by cancer," Jeff Garvey, Livestrong's new chairman, said in a statement. "His devotion to serving survivors is unparalleled and for 15 years, he committed himself to that cause with all his heart."Armstrong, who was accused in a United States Anti-Doping Agency report of helping run a sophisticated, systematic doping program in cycling, has lost his personal sponsors in the wake of his punishment.
