Why no crunches?
We have over 10 major core muscles. Most of these muscles are neglected because they aren't "beach muscles"(superficial muscles that make you look good in a bathing suit).
The rectus abdominus or the six-pack muscle is the most worked out muscle in the body. Whenever someone says they are doing a core or ab workout what they usually mean is that they are doing crunches.
Now, crunches are a fine exercise, they are just overdone. Crunches are done at the expense of all the other core muscles.
So What? Why should you care?
I am glad you asked. Here is the answer: You should care because you care about your health and working your most superficial abdominal muscle doesn't do a whole lot to make or keep you healthy. Most people spend a lot of their day bent forward, in spinal flexion, in cars, or at a desk. Hours and hours and days and days spent in spinal flexion wreak havoc on your spine. Most low back pain is caused by all this forward bending. In order to keep your spine and low back healthy you need to work the core muscles on your sides and back.
Since these muscles are neglected and weak, we will spend the first two weeks crunch free, strengthening the deep core muscles to get you healthy and strong.
Love your shows. I am a strict Vegetarian, but on the way to true veganism. Also recently became really into health and fitness. Love your energy and the info. Thanks so much. Max is so cute too :-)
