man i really one to play the koto but i cant don't have the money and i play the flute sad i want to change but i cant :(. ( when i was really little i wanted to play the koto but back then i didn't know what it was called so when i see one i would go up to my mom and say mommy i want to play that .But then in band i had to choses a instrument flute was the only good one there and i was really dumb to buy it :( now my mom said i can't change instrument.

Yeah, it takes some getting used to if you're completely new to the style, but once you get the hang of it, it should be pretty fun :D

Right Indeed ! im studying music in asian cultures at university. we got to do a workshop in koto, with Yamasawa Sensei from Miyagi Koi In Japan.
The notation is exactly as this comment desribed. Alot harder to play this instrument than i thought. makes you appreciate it more

I think i saw a few koto notation before, Its kind of liek this:
You have boxes, and the notes are read from top to bottom, right to left, and the notes are the japanese numbers 1-10, and 3 other kanji, and they correspond to the strings on the koto. and you play the string that corresponds to the number.

I wonder the same thing beginnerhacker.. it would be cool to see how the Japanese notate koto music. Or at least how they did before the end of the feudal period in Japan.
